The United Jewish Appeal will launch its 1963 nationwide campaign to raise during its 25th anniversary year a record goal of $96,000,000 at a three day inaugural meeting opening tomorrow at the Fontainebleu Hotel here.
Joseph Meyerhoff of Baltimore, UJA general chairman, reported today to members of the UJA National Campaign Cabinet that advance gifts in connection with the inaugural were running better than 25 percent over those contributed in advance of the 1962 campaign opening.
Of the total goal, $36,000,000 will be sought in individual Special Fund gifts earmarked exclusively for the UJA and its agencies. The Special Fund will be sought to expedite the financing of emergency situations stemming from the continuing record influx of immigrant Jews to Israel and the presence in France of more than 160,000 Jewish refugees from Algeria, Tunisia and other countries.
More than 350 key community leaders from all parts of the United States met tonight at the home of Allen S. Manus in Palm Beach to hear Rabbi Herbert A. Firedman, UJA executive vice-chairman, and Israel Army Col. Josef Nevo, commander of the Jerusalem Military District. The UJA National Campaign Cabinet will hold a full session tomorrow to put the final touches to all the preparations made here during the past month to assure the strongest inaugural in the UJA’s 25-year history.
Speakers at the inaugural banquet Sunday night will include U.S. Senator Kenneth B. Keating, New York Republican; Avraham Harman, Israel’s Ambassador to the United States; Mr. Meyerhoff, who will preside, and others.
