Associate Justice William O. Douglas, of the United States Supreme Court, will deliver the keynote address at the National Cash Conference of the United Jewish Appeal which will be held in New York City at the Hotel Roosevelt June 20 and 21, Morris W. Berinstein, UJA general chairman, announced today.
Justice Douglas, who has visited Israel several times, will join Yaacov Herzog, Israel’s Minister Plenipotentiary to the United States, and Dr. Buell G. Gallagher, president of the College of the City of New York, on the conference program. In preparation for the conference, hundreds of communities over the nation are seeking to convert increased pledges to the 1959 UJA campaign into cash, Mr. Berinstein said. They are attempting to raise $40,000,000 in cash for the meeting.
“This money is desperately needed, ” Mr. Berinstein declared, “in order to meet the vital needs of the close to 30, 000 immigrants who have come to Israel in recent months. The money will be used to provide housing and a whole array of absorption services to the newcomers. “
The 1959 drive for cash, in which hundreds of communities over the nation are participating, is running about $5, 000, 000 ahead of last year at the same time, Melvin Dubinsky, of St. Louis, UJA national cash committee chairman, reported.
