The United Jewish Appeal’s Fourth Annual Young Leadership Mission returned here today, following an intensive three-and-a-half-week survey of Jewish immigrant resettlement and refugee aid programs in Israel, France and Italy that are supported with funds raised through the UJA’s nationwide campaigns.
The 85-member group from 28 U. S. communities, all in the 25-to-40 age bracket, are representative of a body of some 7,500 young community leaders throughout the country taking part in an overall Young Leadership program developed by the UJA as a permanent part of its regular campaign structure. Each Mission member paid his own way.
The survey was primarily designed to give Young Leaders the opportunity of a free and informal exchange with leaders of the Israel Government, directors of vital aid programs conducted by UJA-supported agencies, and immigrant families themselves.
Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, UJA executive vice-chairman, who led the mission, hailed the group as “unusually perceptive and alert.” Arriving in Israel with considerable “book-knowledge” of the country and its people, he said “their sensitivity to the overwhelming human problem and their quick grasp of the urgent tasks ahead will make them invaluable partners in the community campaigns ahead.”
