The sub-committee of the United Nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine has begun meeting to seek a permanent solution for control of Jerusalem. The sub-committee, composed of technical advisers of the three-man commission, will hear Israeli and Arab spokesmen present their respective claims to the city and proposals for its future administration.
The commission would welcome a direct agreement between the parties concerned on the future of Jerusalem, Mark Ethridge, chairman of the Commission, said last night, if this agreement included some form of international statute. Otherwise, he pointed out, the Commission, which is bound by the General Assembly resolution providing for internationalization of Jerusalem, will have to make its report to the Assembly and the Assembly will have to take the decision.
