U.N. Emissary on Arab Refugee Problem Meets with Secretary Rusk

Dr. Edward E. Johnson, the United Nations Palestine. Conciliation Commission’s special Middle East emissary on the Arab refugee problem, conferred here today with United States Secretary of State Dean Rusk. The United States, France and Turkey are members of the Commission.

Dr. Johnson, who spent more than two weeks visiting the capitals of Israel, the United Arab Republic, Jordan and Lebanon, as well as the Beirut headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, is now preparing his report to the PCC. The Commission must report to the General Assembly by October 15 on whether any progress had been made toward “repatriation” of Arab refugees into Israel or their compensation by Israel.

A United States source confirming the Johnson-Rusk meeting declined to offer any further comment regarding the conference. The United States source, incidentally, also said that Mr. Rusk, in the course of “meeting as many foreign ministers as possible, ” expected to meet also with Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, However, no date for that talk has as yet been set.
