Pakistan’s refusal to admit an Israeli delegation as “observer” to the scheduled session of the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East, which was to have been held at Karachi, beginning February 17, has caused the UN to alter the opening date of the ECAFE meeting and to move it to Bangkok, Thailand, according to an official announcement made here today.
The fact that Pakistan would not admit any Israelis even to attend a formal UN meeting became known here last week. Today, Philippe de Seynes, Undersecretary for Economic and Social Affairs, notified all members of ECAFE, and all other members of the United Nations, of the change in the schedule and place.
The ECAFE meeting will be opened at Bangkok on March 9, according to Mr. de Seynes. In his cable to all concerned, Mr. de Seynes stated: “It appears that it would be impossible for a member state of the United Nations to participate if the session were held at Karachi, Pakistan. “
