The United Nations Committee on Refugees and Displaced Persons voted today to add a special appendix to its report to the U.N. Social and Economic Council recommending international assistance, financial and otherwise, in the resettlement of Jews in Palestine and other countries.
The recommendation was one of several made by a special sub-committee which studied memoranda submitted by Jewish organizations. Among its other recommendations were:
1. The Jewish Agency should be enabled to cooperate with whatever international agency is established to deal with the refugee problem and should be assisted in obtaining travel documents and transportation for refugees it wishes to bring to Palestine.
2. Emergency measures should be taken to meet the immediate needs of Jewish refugees and DP’s, including retraining, and religious education of orphans.
3. Creation of a special fund from unclaimed Jewish property in Austria and Germany.
4. Creation of a liaison department in the new international refugee agency to work with Jewish organizations.
5. Easing of naturalization laws to enable refugees who have found havens during the war or afterwards to obtain citizenship.
