Dag Hammarskjold. Secretary General of the United Nations, arrived here late today for a 39-hour visit to Israel, as part of his tour of the Middle and Far East.
Mr. Hammarskjold was greeted by Israel Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett, who introduced Mr. Hammarskjold to the many members of the diplomatic corp who came to greet him at the airport. Also present were ranking UN officials in Palestine.
The UN Secretary General expressed pleasure at being in Israel and said that in his short visit he would try to see and understand as much as possible. He then left for Jerusalem to attend a government dinner in his honor. Tomorrow, he will confer with Israel Government officials.
An Egyptian broadcast reported today that at a press conference in Cairo yesterday Mr. Hammarskjold said his meeting there with the Egyptian Premier, Gamel Abdel Nasser has confirmed his “continuing optimism” that the Arabs and Israel, ultimately will settle their Palestine conflict. He was reported as lauding the wisdom of Premier Nasser and his Foreign Minister Mahmoud Fawzi.
