Dr. Ralph J. Bunche, acting U.N. mediator for Palestine, today formally notified the Security Council that an armistice agreement has been signed by Israel and Syria. His statement was read out at today’s session of the Council by Dmitri Manuilsky, president for July.
Acting U.N. Secretary-General Byron Price issued a statement today declaring that “the signing of the armistice agreement between Israel and Syria successfully completes the series of agreements aimed at promoting the return of permanent peace in Palestine.” Lauding the “wise statesmanship on the part of both parties,” Mr. Price added:
“The four armistice agreements between Israel on the one hand and Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria on the other, prove once again that the processes of mediation and conciliation employed by the United Nations are bearing fruit. The success of these methods in Palestine will be an inspiration to all United Nations missions engaged in this work.”
