An attempt by the United Nations truce organization in Palestine to allay apprehension in Israel that Gen. Vagn Bennike, head of the UN machinery, will attempt to widen his powers and authorities to the extent that they will interfere with Israel’s sovereignty, was made here today by Hamilton Fisher, UN press officer here.
In a statement to newsmen, Mr. Fisher said that Gen. Bennike has no intention of seeking an extension of the authority vested in him by the UN Security Council. The statement said that Gen. Bennike is determined to use his authority whenever necessary, hoping and expecting that he will enjoy the full cooperation of all parties At the same time, Gen. Bennike is equally determined not to abuse his authority to the detriment of either party or in violation of the legitimate sovereign rights of the parties involved.
