The U.N. Sub-Commission on Freedom of Information of the Press today rejected a proposal which would have denied press freedom to publications which spread or incite racial and religious prejudice. The vote has a tie but under the roles of procedure a tie vote is equivalent to rejection.
The proposal was presented last week by Dr. Maurice Halperin, secretary of the Coordinating Board of Jewish Organizations, which is composed of the American Jewish Conference, the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.
The following delegates voted for the proposal: France, Czechoslovakia, U.S.S.R, Philippines, Panama; against: United Kingdom, Netherlands, United States, Norway, Canada. The Uruguyan delegate was absent.
