The United Nations announced today that a stained glass panel by the famous Jewish artist, Marc Chagall will be unveiled at UN headquarters here on September 17, as a memorial to former Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold and the 15 persons who died with him in a plane crash in northern Rhodesia. The ceremony will mark the third anniversary of the accident.
The memorial will be unveiled by Secretary General U Thant in the lobby of the Secretariat Building in the presence of the artist and Mrs. Chagall. United Nations staff members here and abroad have contributed $15, 000 to date for this project. The panel, 15 feet wide and 12 feet high, depicts conceptions by Mr. Chagall on the themes of peace and man.
