United Nations truce supervision chief here, Maj. Gen. Carl von Horn, today instructed Col. James Rickey, new head of the Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission, to call a meeting of the unit to discuss a dispute arising from Israel’s planting of trees in the no-man’s land area near UN headquarters in this city.
If Israel, which has boycotted the MAC since 1956, comes to this session, it may signify the gradual abandonment of the boycott. UN sources here said at the recent meeting between UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold and Premier David Ben Gurion it had been indicated that Israel would be willing to come to a MAC meeting on the tree issue.
Meanwhile, UN observers and Israeli army officers began an inquiry today into last night’s incursion into Israel territory of Syrian shepherds and their flocks. When an Israeli patrol moved to turn the Syrians back, they opened fire. The Israelis returned the fire. It is believed that in addition to one Israeli wounded in the exchange, three Arabs were hit.
