U.N. headquarters here was informed today that Gen. Aage Lundstroem, chief of staff to the acting U.N. Palestine mediator, has made an urgent appeal to the Israeli and Egyptian commanders in the Gaza area to order an immediate cease-fire.
The request followed closely on the heels of reports from U.N. truce observers that serious fighting, involving armored vehicles, took place at the village of Makhaz yesterday. Lundstroem informed the Israeli and Egyptian commanders that the Gaza fighting is a “serious breach of the truce” and asked both sides to cooperate with a special U.N. investigating team dispatched to the Gaza sector to ascertain responsibility for the fighting.
U.N. relief operations for those who have become refugees as a result of the Palestine war, and who are now living in Israel, reached a new stage today when the U.N. and the U.N. International Children’s Emergency Fund reached an agreement with the Israeli Government regarding the distribution of relief supplies to displaced persons in Israeli territory.
