Sir Carl Berendsen, of New Zealand, disclosed today he would press for quick disposal of the Jerusalem question when it is taken up by the United Nations Trusteeship Council on Monday.
He said he was preparing a suggestion that the Council, of which he is a member, simply pass on to the General Assembly a report of its activities with regard to Jerusalem, along with the memorandum from Israel rejecting the Council’s statute of internationalization drawn up at its last session in Geneva and submitting an Israel Government proposal for an international regime of the Holy Places alone.
In conjunction with his suggestion, Sir Carl will urge dispensing with further debate on the Jerusalem issue, claiming that the Council, having written a statute and been unable to implement it, has fulfilled the Assembly’s mandate of last December and now had no further responsibility in the matter.
He said he would insist that an alternative Jerusalem plan such as the new Israel proposal was beyond the Council’s terms of reference to discuss. He expressed his belief, however, that the Israel formula for Jerusalem was likely to win wide favor in the Assembly, especially since a reaffirmation of the Assembly’s own scheme-complete internationalization–was “out of the question in my opinion.”
