The safety of the Holy Places in Jerusalem can very well be reconciled with respect for treaties and the sovereignty of the nations involved, Israel representative Aubrey S. Eban today told the U.N. Trusteeship Council today.
Mr. Eban used the words of the Council itself to bolster his argument. At the time the Council was discussing an article of the draft statute for Jerusalem which provides that U.N. supervision of the Holy Places outside Jerusalem should be accomplished with the cooperation of the governments concerned.
Mr. Eban seized upon this opportunity to point out that if the U.N. considered such an arrangement an adequate safeguard for the Holy Places outside the city it should consider the same sort of arrangement satisfactory for the Holy Places inside Jerusalem.
The second reading of the statute, originally drafted in 1948, will be completed today or tomorrow. After that the measure will be given a third reading, and put to a vote. The current Council session is scheduled to end April 6.
