A summary of recent United States grants and loans to the United Arab Republic indicated today that the Arab country received almost as much in such aid as the amount of the World Bank loan to widen the Suez Canal.
The United States aid included a huge project to expand and modernize the large Cairo airport to adapt it for use by the newest let liners and bombers. Observers estimated the value of the project at around $25,000,000.
Another United States grant was for $12,000,000 to build the UAR’s first television station. In addition, the Export-Import Bank granted the UAR a $12,000,000 credit for the purchase of locomotives and other railroad equipment. The Department of Agriculture provided an authorization for $2,370,000 for purchase of American surplus wheat and flour.
