Construction of a centripetal pump is the first achievement of a research project sponsored at the Israel Institute of Technology here by the United States Air Force, it was announced today.
Building of the pump is considered a great scientific development. Scientists expect the pump, developed under the direction of Prof. Marcus Riener, head of the electrical laboratories at the Technion, to have a revolutionary effect in aeronautical engineering and is believed to have possibilities in the field of guided missiles.
The new pump, which is all metal, will be used as a compressor. It is designed to increase its efficiency as the density of the atmosphere decreases, thus making it must useful in the upper atmosphere. Meanwhile, the U. S. Air Force has extended its contract with the Technion for another year in order to test the pump at various pressures and temperatures.
