United States Ambassador William Phillips today visited Foreign Minister Galeazzo Ciano and made friendly inquiries on behalf of the United States Government as to the meaning of the present anti-Jewish campaign. Mr. Phillips reminded Count Ciano of previous assurances that there was no room for anti-Semitism in Italy.

It is understood that Count Ciano replied that racial problems “are now in the process of study” and emphasized that it was too early to say to what extent the Italian Jews would be affected, but that the racial policy was principally aimed at preserving Italian racial purity in connection with Italian imperial policy.
