The United States and Israel are at odds today on three issues, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency, said here today. They do not see eye to eye on the Arab refugee question, the principle of compensation for territory occupied by Israel beyond the borders laid down in the U.N. partition plan and the future of Jerusalem, he told a news parley.
Dr. Goldmann stated that influential Catholic circles in the U.S. are pressing for internationalization of Jerusalem. All three issues, he said, may come to a head at the September meeting of the U.N. General Assembly unless a “miracle happens at Lausanne” where the U.N. Conciliation Commission will resume efforts next week to secure Arab-Israeli agreement to a peace treaty.
The tendency in the State Department now, Dr. Goldmann asserted, is to devise a common policy with the British and French Foreign Offices on Middle East policy. He pointed out, however, that this does not mean that full Anglo-American agreement exists on all details.
