Israel and the United States have been discussing measures to be taken in the event that Egyptian and Syrian agents attempt to provoke border incidents between Jordan and Israel, it was learned here today.
At the talks, which took place in Washington, the United States is said to have stressed the importance of Israel’s avoiding being provoked by Egyptian agents into retaliating against Jordan for cross-border incidents. The Israelis reportedly indicated their awareness of such a danger.
Both parties are understood to have agreed that the danger of Egyptian intervention in Jordan has not passed, but that Egypt is not likely to attempt open intervention at this time. Washington’s view in this matter to avoid any action which is likely to again weld the Arab states into a “unity” and there reverse the isolation of the Nasser regime in the Middle East.
