The United States again today called upon the Arab governments–without naming any of them–to help the United Nations agency caring for the Arab refugees in implementing constructive projects that would help support a “substantial number of refugees.” Such help, declared James J. Wadsworth, U.S. representative in the General Assembly’s special political committee, would provide a “general stimulus to all the governments in the area.”
Mr. Wadsworth was one of the first speakers on the resolution now before the committee. The resolution presented yesterday by the U.S., Britain and Turkey follows general, Mr. Wadsworth said, the pattern of Arab refugee resolutions adopted in previous years and tries to focus on the administrative problems of the UN agency rather than on the “complex political problems.” The representatives of Egypt, Jordan and Syria also spoke on the resolution, restricting themselves to repetition of abuse of Israel.
