The Department of the Army is considering a plan to designate the Jewish Agency the official body to transfer Jewish displaced persons now in Europe to Israel, it was authoritatively learned here today.
Gen. Lucius D. Clay, U.S. military commander in Germany, reportedly has proposed such a plan to Washington. An official announcement outlining the proposal was scheduled to be made here last Friday but was postponed for undisclosed reasons.
Last week the International Refugee Organization announced that it could not assume any responsibility for the transfer of Jewish DP’s from Europe to Israel because of the fighting now raging in Palestine and because the United Nations, with which the I.R.O. is affiliated, has not recognized the Jewish state.
Observers here believe that the U.H. cease-fire plea to both warring sides in Palestine, which bars the entrance of persons of military age into Palestine during a four-weeks truce period, will not affect the immigration to Israel of women and children.
