The majority of the 1,500 Jewish refugees who found employment in the offices and warehouses of the U.S. Army installations in Shanghai have been laid off as a result of the decrease in American military forces stationed here. Most of the refugees were employed for about six months.
With the withdrawal of American troops set for this month and with the transfer of American military headquarters to Nanking, once again China’s capital, the remaining few refugees will be out of a job. There are few steady positions available now, but it is hoped that once world shipping and trade return to normal, the port will again provide sufficient opportunities for all.
