Phillips Talbott, American Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, continued his talks today with Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister. He also met with Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion.

Senator Stuart Symington was guest of honor at a reception tendered by Education Minister Abba Eban. The Senator extolled the close ties between Israel and the United States and praised Mr. Eban’s services during his tenure as Israel’s Ambassador to the United States.

Israel was described today as “one of the most remarkable examples of democracy in the world” by Dr. Robert Hutchins, president of the Fund for the Republic and former Chancellor of the University of Chicago.

During a visit here, Dr. Hutchins said most new and developing nations have difficulty in establishing democratic regimes but that Israel, despite its “unexampled” rate of development, had succeeded in that task. Dr. Hutchins and 21 members of his group were received by President Ben-Zvi yesterday and were guests of honor at a dinner last night given by Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister.
