U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno convened a Justice Department conference on combating hate crimes. Attorneys from around the United States gathered in Washington to discuss ways of coordinating law-enforcement efforts and using community outreach to improve hate-crime reporting. The meeting was held as a follow-up to a White House conference last year at which President Clinton announced a series of law enforcement and prevention efforts to counter hate- driven violence.
