The Department of Justice will enforce civil rights laws even if they conflict with state legislation, Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr. declared here yesterday at a meeting.
He also took credit for his department for the ending of segregation in Washington, D.C., restaurants. It had been ended by the Justice Department’s carrying the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, he said, adding that “there has not been a bit of trouble” in the nation’s capital over the decision ending segregation in public eating places.
