The Hebrew Academy of Nassau County, an all-day school, announced today that its application for five acres of the deactivated Mitchel Field Properties in Hempstead, N. Y. for an expansion program had been approved by the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare. School officials said this was the first such award by the federal government to a Jewish institution.
Moses Hornstein, president, said the transfer of title to the property would take place next week. He said the grant “reflects recognition of the county-wide role of the Hebrew Academy and of the educational excellence it has achieved.” The school, founded in 1953, now has 560 students at its campuses in West Hempstead and Bethpage, site of its affiliate, the Mid-Island Hebrew Day School.
