Declaring that Jews living in most Arab nations are subjected to “the cruelest forms of harassment, discrimination, restriction and arbitrary arrest and imprisonment,” Rep. Herman Badillo (D.N.Y.) introduced legislation aimed at making it easier for those Jews to emigrate to the United States. Badillo’s bill, which was co-sponsored by 15 other Congressmen, would make 60,000 special immigrant visas immediately available to Jewish citizens in the Arab countries of Algeria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Republic and Yemen.
