The State Department continued its silence today on the three-day visit in Cairo of British Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home and also refused to comment on the American position regarding a return by the Big Four to the Middle East settlement efforts. It indicated, however, that the American interim agreement idea to reopen the Suez Canal is still a top priority.
Department spokesman Charles Bray reiterated his statement of yesterday that the U.S. would have no comment on Sir Alec until American officials have a chance to talk with British officials and see the Foreign Secretary himself in New York. Asked about the American attitude toward a resumption of the Jarring peace mission and a role for the Swedish diplomat at this stage, Bray said that “We have always looked for the interim proposal as a way of reviving the momentum in behalf of an over-all settlement.”
