Confirmation of the report that Gen. Giraud’s military commanders have received secret instructions to assign Jewish officers and men in the reserve to special non-combatant work units in order to prevent them from claiming the title of war veterans after the war, is given in a cable dated “United Nations Headquarters in North Africa,”published in the Christian Science Monitor yesterday.
R. Maillard Stead, Monitor correspondent accredited to the Allied Forces in North Africa, states in his cable: “General Giraud himself comes under fire of criticism from various quarters. It is asserted some internal directions made in Africa since March 14 are at variance with his ‘Declaration of Liberty’ on that date. I have seen an apparently authentic copy of highly confidential instructions ordering relevant military authorities to enlist Jews only in labor corps or regiments with native soldiers in them, though in theory there is no discrimination agains Jews in mobilization.”
