The Federal District Court today denied bail to Andrija Artukovic, war-time Minister of Interior of the Nazi puppet state of Croatia, who has been charged with responsibility in the extermination of a large number of Jews. Artukovic was ordered held until October 15 when the Yugoslav Government will present evidence to prove the war crimes charges which prompted the request for his extradition.
A crowd of about 200 people, made up principally of Artukovic’s sympathizers, gathered in the area of the court and there were angry expressions against those seeking to bring the Croatian Nazi to justice. Artukovic requested the court to allow him to bring witnesses from Argentina to testify in his behalf. It is known that Ante Pavelic, the pro-Nazi chief of the Croat puppet regime, and a number of S.S. of ficers and other was criminals are residing in Argentina where they took refuge at the close of World War II when they were sought as war criminals.
