American Undersecretary of Defense Robert Komer arrived here today from Cairo to hold regional strategic talks against the background of the Iranian-Iraqi war, according to Israeli officials.
Komer, who arrived here with an entourage of military experts, met today with Deputy Defense Minister Mordechai Zipori, Israel’s Chief of Staff Gen. Raphael Eitan and other Defense Ministry officials. He is scheduled to meet tomorrow with Premier Menachem Begin in his capacity as Defense Minister.
Israeli officials disclosed that among the topics to be discussed with the American officials are the possibility of an Israeli-American defense pact and joint Israeli-American military exercises.
Meanwhile, it was reported here that Jordan seems to be providing Iraq not only with airfield facilities for its non-combat aircraft but is also providing Iraq with port services. It seems that Aqaba, near Eilat, is becoming the back door approach to Iraq and on unusual number of ships are unloading heavy equipment there apparently for Iraq, which receives the goods via a land bridge.
