The American Embassy in Israel has warned Americans serving in Israel’s armed forces that if they remain in service as of December 24 they will lose their American citizenship under the McCarran Immigration Law, which comes into effect on that day.
Israel authorities have attempted to gain permission from the United States Secretaries of State and Defense for the Americans to remain in the Israel services–which is permissible under the law if the two Secretaries concur–but the Embassy’s warning noted that the Secretaries ” do not contemplate” granting such authorization. American citizens were drafted into Israel’s armed services under the present law which permits such service if Americans do not take an oath of allegiance to a foreign power.
