Secretary of State Christian Herter today indicated to a press conference that the United States continued to look to the United Nations for a solution to the Suez Canal controversy involving the transit of Israeli cargo.
The Secretary commented on what the United States was doing to implement President Eisenhower’s 1957 assurances to Israel on Suez Canal transit. He said the United States had made a number of strong statements on the transit issue.
Mr. Herter pointed out that Dag Kammarskjold, UN Secretary General, was currently making an effort to find a solution and said that maybe Mr. Hammarskjold would still come up with a modus vivendi.
