Secretary of State Dean Acheson today announced that Frank L. Weil, honorary president of the National Jewish Welfare Board, has accepted an invitation to serve as the 1952 chairman of the National Citizens’ Committee for United Nations Day–October 24, 1952.
Mr. Weil has been actively engaged in civic activities for many years. He has been president and chairman of the executive committee of the National Social Welfare Assembly and for ten years served as president of the National Jewish Welfare Board. President Truman named him chairman of the President’s Committee on Religion and Moral Welfare in the Armed Services. He was also a member of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO when it was first organized.
The Jewish leader met today with Howland H. Sargeant, Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs, to discuss plans for the 1952 observance of U.N. Day. Mr. Sargeant conveyed a message from Secretary Acheson thanking Mr. Weil for taking the new chairmanship and pointing out that it was only by the pooling of efforts in the United Nations that the many problems facing the world could be solved. Accepting the appointment, Mr. Weil said the upbuilding of armament may only avoid war; it will not bring peace. The enemies of peoples, he said, are hunger, disease, ignorance, and poverty, and in fighting these enemies of peace, the U.N. is helping to insure a war-weary world a peaceful future.
