Modern Hebrew, together with Arabic, Persian and Turkish, will be taught at a government-sponsored center at Harvard University, it was reported here today by U.S. Commissioner of Education Lawrence G. Derthick. The program will be conducted under the foreign language provisions of the National Defense Education Act.
The center will provide not only instruction in modern Hebrew but also in the cultural and economic aspects of present-day Israel. Fellowships are being awarded to graduate students to do advanced work in the languages under the new program which includes many tongues other than those of the Near East.
