Four leading Hebrew teachers colleges in America will be sending their top undergraduate students to Israel this summer for a six-month training seminar conducted by the Department for Culture and Education of the World Zionist Organization, it was announced here today.
The colleges are: The Teachers Institute of Yeshiva University; the Teachers Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America; the Herzlia Hebrew Teachers Institute, all of New York City, and the Hebrew Teachers College of Roxbury, Mass. All are constituents of the Association of Jewish Teachers Training Colleges of the United States.
The Association has appointed Dr. Sidney B. Hoenig, Professor of History at Yeshiva University, to direct the seminar. Each college has chosen the highest ranking members of its senior class to attend the seminar which is in the nature of a scholarship. It will count as academic credit for the first semester of the students’final year of studies. The group is limited to 25. They will leave New York August 6th. The seminar begins in Jerusalem September 1st and closes at the end of January.
The seminar is designed to bring future American Hebrew teachers into the closest possible contact with Israel’s culture and her educational methods. The students will not only pursue their regular curriculum but will gain practical experience by teaching classes in Israel. They will be taken on a tour of the country, visiting schools and meeting some of Israel’s foremost educators.
