John J. McCloy, American High Commissioner in Germany, has reassured the American Federation of Jews from Central Europe that the Allies are “resolved not to permit any developments which would jeopardize the successful conclusion of the restitution programs” in Western Germany.
The Federation, which last month expressed concern to Secretary of State Dean Acheson and Commissioner McCloy over reports that the Allies are preparing to drop control of the tri-zonal restitution programs, released the High Commissioner’s reply today.
The McCloy reply, contained in a cable from Frankfurt, said: “I can state definitely that the Foreign Ministers have taken no decision which could be interpreted as adversely affecting the administration of the zonal restitution programs.” He also reported that in a “recent address to the German people over the Western German radic stations I publicly announced the intention of the High Commission to retain its authority in the field of restitution.”
