The danger of haste in ending the occupation of Germany was indicated by U.S. High Commissioner John J. McCloy in a report to the State Department released here today. The report underlined the growing revival of Nazism in Germany and emphasized that unless the resurgence of German nationalism is checked, there will be “general disaster.”
The American High Commissioner said that neo-Nazi parties are competing with each other in stimulating ultra-nationalistic feeling among the German population and that they dub anyone who opposed Hitler a traitor.
“They vilify the Allies and seek to distort Allied policy and the genuine desire of the Western Powers to bring Germany back into the community of nations as a democratic partner,” Mr. McCloy reported. He stressed that most of the established political parties in Germany “have been stocking the merchandise of nationalism” and that “even some Federal Ministers” are engaged in expressing “highly nationalistic sentiments.”
“The use of extreme nationalist narcotic creates the need for larger doses,” he warned, “Worse, the users must ultimately find that they cannot subsist on talk alone, but must resort to some action to avoid decline.”
