The staff of ORT at Bamako, Mali, has received the United States Meritorious Honor Award for its technical assistance in the West African country under a contract from Agency for International Development, it was reported here today.
The award was given to the ORT staff at Bamako by the United States Ambassador there, S. E. Handly, citing the group for “unusual effectiveness and unusual initiative despite handicaps” in the conduct of the country’s first science center and advanced technical school.
Along with the citation, Ambassador Handly informed ORT that it has had its AID contract renewed until 1967 by the agency, which has its headquarters in Washington. ORT’s Bamako school has graduated 16 future instructors who, under the renewed contract, will now be sent to the Central Ort Institute in Switzerland for further advanced training.
At the Swiss school conducted by ORT, the students from Mali will be joined by others trained by ORT at Conakry, Guinea, also under an AID contract. Both African ORT projects are now in their third year. The Mali and Guinea courses conducted by ORT are training instructors in refrigeration, diesel engines, electrical mechanics, secretarial skills and drafting.
