U.S. House and Senate lawmakers called for quick passage of legislation that would exempt restitution paid to Holocaust survivors from federal income taxes. The bill would apply to all settlements reached with survivors, including payments already made. At a news conference Thursday, the lawmakers said it would be a mistake for the U.S. government to profit from the pain and suffering of Holocaust victims.
