An advanced desalination program prepared by the National Council for Research and Development, a branch of the Prime Minister’s office, will be part of a joint Israeli-US exchange on water problems opening here shortly. The Israeli team of desalination experts will be headed by Natan Berman. The American contingent will be composed of Emory Roberts of the Agency for International Development, and Robert Evans, Francis Colley and John Callahan representing other US agencies engaged in desalination programs.
Consideration of a joint Israeli-US project dates back to 1964 when an agreement to coordinate efforts in desalination was reached between former President Lyndon B. Johnson and the late Premier Levi Eshkol of Israel. The present scheme was researched at a power station in Ashdod named in memory of Premier Eshkol. It is to be fitted with equipment capable of producing 13 million cubic meters of potable water per year.
