U.S. Army Chaplain Oskar M. Lifshutz was honored here by all Jewish organizations and welfare agencies on the occasion of his return to the United States after four years of service as a Jewish chaplain with the American military forces in Austria. He will continue his service as a Jewish chaplain at Fort Louis, Washington, where he will serve with the Second Infantry Division.
The role which he played as a mediator between the Austrian Jews, the displaced persons and the American military authorities in Austria was emphasized by all speakers. He will be replaced by Chaplain Hermann Dicker who is now serving in Munich.
The International Committee for Jewish Concentration Camp Inmates and Refugees in Austria has given a photograph to Brig. Gen. Jesmond D. Balmer, Deputy High Commissioner in Austria, showing the planting of ten trees in Israel as a tribute to Gen. Balmer in gratitude for his help to Jewish refugees. The presentation was made to Gen. Balmer prior to his departure for duty in the United States, after serving five years in Europe.
