U.S. Jewish groups urged the House Judiciary Committee to pass legislation aimed at strengthening the federal hate-crimes statute. The committee held hearings on the Hate Crimes Prevention Act on Wednesday, just weeks after the Senate approved the bill. The measure allows the federal government to prosecute hate crimes sparked by a victim’s sexual orientation, gender or disability. Current federal law applies only to crimes motivated by race, color, religion or national origin.
