Jews in the United States are “deeply troubled by the growing perils that beset Israel,” by arrogant speeches made by hostile states in the United Nations, as well as by unchecked and unrebuked aggressions against Israel, Louis Lipsky, veteran Zionist leader, declared here tonight at a dinner given in his honor at the Hotel Pierre. The occasion was his 80th birthday and marked his contributions to the development of the Zionist movement.
The proceedings of the United Nations, Mr. Lipsky told the distinguished audience of Jewish leaders from all walks of life who attended the dinner, give the impression that “Israel lives in the United Nations in a state of isolation and under calculated discriminations. It is a humiliating exhibition of the low state of international procedures and practices, “he declared. “It gives evidence of a lack of fairness and statesman-ship. It reveals behind the mask of diplomacy ominous ambitions and aggressions.”
The American Zionist lender pointed out, however, that there is a democratic world which sympathizes with “the ideals and achievements of Israel and are not misled by the artifices that hide the real ambitions and purposes of the corporate political bodies constituting the membership of the UN. There is a liberal world that appreciates the moral values of the sanctuary created by Israel for the reception of refugees from the persecutions and hatreds generated and fostered by the same states who, many of them, prate in the UN of peace and justice and who would apply sanctions eagerly against a small state like Israel by closing their eyes tight to the wrongs they themselves and their favorites pursue year after year, decade after decade.”
Tributes to Mr, Lipsky were paid at the dinner by Dr. Nahum Goldmann, Dr. Israel Goldstein, Meyer Weisgat and others. Mrs. Rose L. Halprin, acting chairman of the Jewish Agency, presided at the affair, which was arranged by a committee representing presidents of major Jewish organizations.
