Joshua Levy, treasurer of the Histadrut, Israel’s Labor Federation, urged American Jews today to provide a scholarship fund of $5,000,000 to help assure secondary education for Israeli youth. He said such aid was particularly needed for children from Oriental countries most of whom cannot afford the costs of secondary and university education. Israel does not have free high school facilities.
Speaking at a press luncheon the Histadrut official reported that Histadrut has a membership of 800,000 and expects soon to reach the 1,000,000 mark. The Labor organization’s projected budget for 1963 is 250,000,000 pounds ($80,000,000), he reported. He also disclosed that Histadrut has undertaken a program of seeking to lower the costs of a trip to Israel so that more people will come as visitors.
