A 12-member delegation of Senators, headed by Democrat Abraham Ribicoff of Connecticut and Republic can Howard Baker of Tennessee is due to arrive in Israel today for an inspection of Israel’s nuclear needs and the supervision of its nuclear projects.
The visit is part of an 18-day study mission to Israel, Egypt and Iran to inspect their needs for the proposed sale of American nuclear reactors. Israel and Egypt each want two reactors. Iran wants eight. The visit comes in the context of President-elect Jimmy Carter’s election pledge to push for tighter control of nuclear power distribution in the world. The delegation is scheduled to present its findings to Congress. Israel, therefore, places much importance to the visit.
Two other Senators in the delegation are Thomas Eagleton of Missouri and John Glenn of Ohio, both Democrats. (Glenn was incorrectly listed as a Republican in the Nov. 4 Daily News Bulletin,) The delegation will meet with Premier Yitzhak Rabin. Defense Minister Shimon Peres and Foreign Minister Yigal Allon and will also confer with senior army officers. Two other American delegations, one from the House of Representatives and another comprising American Mayors, are expected later this week.
