The American German-language organ, Die Neue Zeitung, will not review the controversial new film, “The Immortal Beloved,” it announced, because of the political issues involved. The film was produced by Viet Harlan, who directed the notorious anti-Jewish film “Jew Suess” under the Nazis. Its showing in Germany has met with numerous hostile demonstrations and demands that permission to show the film be revoked.
The newspaper said that it was not the film itself which was the subject of controversy. The fact that Harlan was the producer, could not be overlooked, it said, and therefore, any review of the film was bound to contain political elements. A review of the film, it added, could not be based on purely esthetic consideration.
