The United States sees similarities between the current situation leading up to Israel’s May 17 election and the political circumstances preceding Operation Grapes of Wrath, the 16-day offensive against Hezbollah ordered by then-Prime Minister Shimon Peres in the run-up to the 1996 elections, according to the paper.
